History of Mount Pleasant

The neighborhood of Mount Pleasant has undergone several changes since the late 1880s to the early 1900’s. Mount Pleasant’s origins could be best described with how businesses used the former stream that ran through the neighborhood. During 1888-1912, the stream had attracted several breweries to Mount Pleasant. The stream was nicknamed “Brewery Creek” for the large amount of breweries that ran along the stream shoreline. This former stream had developed much of the uniqueness and character that Mount Pleasant provides today. In 1890, the first streetcar transportation in the area, along with the industrial neighbor of False Creek, provided for potential working class families that populated the area. Mount Pleasant was considered at the time to be Vancouver’s first suburb and provided the necessities for the residents in the area.
